History Of Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

The Panaji Church or the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is situated in the heart of Panaji City, near the Municipal Garden. As history goes, the church was first built as a chapel in 1541 to serve the religious needs of Portuguese mariners at their first port of call as they landed before continuing further. The Chapel was replaced by a bigger church in 1609 to minister to the mariners and the inhabitants too. The distinctive feature of the Panaji church are the zigzag symmetrical stairs, which were later added around the 18th century. The church also houses the second largest bell in Goa. The exterior of the church proudly displays architectural elements of the Baroque style. The interior of the church features the main altar dedicated to Mother Mary.

Interior and Art

The interior of this church is relatively simple, especially when one compares it to the abundantly embellished reredoses and carvings that one finds in the churches in Old Goa. However, the beautification has been skillfully and gracefully executed both on the main altar and on the two sub-altars which flank it. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, known as Nossa Senhora da Immaculada Conceicao in Portuguese. The altar on the right is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, while the one on the left is committed to the Crucifixion of Christ.
